1. Lake Erie: Geneva State Park Campground

Located right on the shores of Lake Erie, Geneva State Park has 698 acres of park and includes a large wooded campground. Explore the shoreline for agates or look for interesting driftwood, swim off the sandy beach, try your hand at some fishing (noted for some of the best walleye fishing!). The campsites are a mix of full hookup and electric only RV and tent sites. They are all walking distance down to the beach, but if you want to stay lakeside there are 12 camper cabins overlooking Lake Erie. With so many options you can see why Geneva is one of the best places to camp in Ohio this summer!

2. Pymatuning Lake Park Campground

The largest lake in Ohio (besides Lake Erie of course) is Pymatuning Lake. It shares the border with Pennsylvania, but on the Ohio side is the Pymatuning Lake Park Campground. Head to the lake for a swim at the beach or take a boat out for some fishing. The lake is stocked annually with walleye and muskie, but you can also find bluegill, crappie and catfish. The campground has a whole area with modern cabins for rent, there are basic, preferred and premium cabins all furnished with bedrooms, kitchens and baths. One even has a Jacuzzi on the deck (now that is hardly roughing it!). The campsites for RV’s and tents are in a nice wooded area and have picnic tables and fire rings. There are hot showers, laundry and a camp store in case you forget anything. A nice option for camping in Ohio with a wide range of camping experiences.

3. Cedar Point Amusement Park: Lighthouse Point

Halfway between Toledo and Cleveland is the very popular Cedar Point. Out on this peninsula on Lake Erie is everything you can imagine for an unforgettable vacation. The Cedar Point Amusement park is the main attraction with 17 roller coasters and 70 rides for all ages. Right next door is the Cedar Point Shores water park with a splash play area for little kids as well as stomach losing waterslides. Besides the parks there is a mile-long sandy beach for swimming, sunbathing, paddle boarding and more. Lighthouse Point is the campground is located right on the peninsula so everything is centrally located. There are 145 RV campsites and 156 cabins and cottages, some right on the lake. Imagine watching a bald eagle swoop down and snatch a trout out of Lake Erie while you sip your morning coffee. Great way to start the day before heading out for a fun-packed day.

4. Hocking Hills State Park

For some of the best hiking in Ohio, you have to visit Hocking Hills State Park. Hike to the Whispering Falls, the Rose Lake overlook or check out the large rock formations around Whispering cave. Do you think you might see some bats hanging in the caves? You can hike across the suspension bridge and along several creeks where you might see a painted turtle sunning on a rock. The campground has 150 electric sites and 13 non-electric sites. For a more primitive and private camping experience there are 30 primitive sites spread out in the park with access to pit latrines. At the other end of the spectrum are the 3 bedroom cabins with kitchens/baths and you have to check out the treehouse with a hot tub! Now that would be a unique stay. Hocking Hills is definitely one of the best places to camp in Ohio this summer!

5. Kelleys Island State Park

After you’ve camped in a treehouse you are probably going to want to try camping in a yurt on an island! Kelleys Island State Park in on an island north of Sandusky. It is only accessible by ferry or boat (so let the adventure begin). The island is 677 acres of land with hiking trails, glacial rock formations and overlooks of beautiful Lake Erie. Many record breaking fish in Ohio have been caught in Lake Erie and it is good fishing for walleye, smallmouth bass, yellow perch and white bass. The campground on the island offers lakeside sites with non-electric, electric and electric/water. The sites are for tents and RV’s. How exactly do you get your RV to an island? There are several ferry services that offer RV transportation but check on size limits before booking your campsite. The campground has 2 cabins and 2 yurts available to rent as well.
