The video is shot using a drone of a swimmer enjoying a workout doing some backstrokes. The green waters surrounding him were too still for what lay beneath it. Imagine that you are soaking in the sun on a warm sunny day. You think deeply about how nice the water feels against your skin. Little do you know; a giant shark was so close they could touch you if they wanted to. The guy in the video never became aware of the shark, and a classic song by M.C. Hammer plays in the background. Can you guess what song it is? It’s “U Can’t Touch This.” Seeing as how the shark, in fact, did not touch him, it’s safe to say the playlist for the video was well thought out. If that doesn’t get you excited for a shark video, what else possibly could? These enormous creatures with thousands of teeth could pass by without you knowing. Okay, so you shouldn’t be deathly afraid of a shark encounter. As crazy as it is to see on videos, it’s rare that you will ever have that encounter yourself. Sharks don’t actively try to consume humans as a lunch or side dish, so the chances of you getting bitten are improbable. Under a hundred attacks have been reported yearly worldwide. For a better comparison, 2,000 people die by lightning every year worldwide. It’s more likely that you will get struck by a bolt of electricity shooting from the sky than be attacked by a shark. In fact, the most outrageous way that people die is by coconuts. They kill 150 people per year worldwide. Statistics don’t lie, so you can rest easy knowing sharks probably won’t hurt you, but a coconut might. Also, whoever needs to know this: they aren’t at the bottom of swimming pools. The shark that casually strolls by the swimmer is a hammerhead shark. It is an excellent example of how they typically leave humans alone. What’s interesting about this type, aside from its odd-shaped head, is there have been zero reports of a hammerhead shark attacking a human. Check out the video below of a swimmer who came face to face with a hammerhead shark. Or, more accurately, back to face. This should help ease your mind and show you that sharks typically aren’t looking to hurt humans. If they did, they would cause some severe damage. We hope this article has helped put the risk of a shark attack in perspective for you. Sharks definitely shouldn’t be feared as much as they are, but please remember to still use caution when swimming near them or in their habitats!
